Friend of the World or Friend of God: Stop Entertaining Sin

Opening Verse

"Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God." (James 4:4, KJV)

The Message

James does not soften his words. He looks at believers who are fighting, restless, and unsatisfied, and he tells them where the trouble is coming from. It is not their circumstances. It is not other people. It is the desires warring inside of them. And then he says something every man needs to hear: you cannot be a friend of the world and a friend of God at the same time. When we choose the world, we are not standing in some neutral middle ground. We are choosing a side, and that side is against God.

That is a hard word, but it is a loving one. God is not trying to take something good away from us. He is trying to rescue us from something that will destroy us.

The war starts on the inside

"From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts." (James 4:1-3, KJV)

Many of the battles men face in their homes, their marriages, and their minds begin with desire that has not been brought under God. Lust is never satisfied. It always wants one more look, one more scroll, one more thought. It promises fulfillment and leaves a man emptier than before.

Scripture shows us exactly how it works. Sin does not start with the act. It starts with the desire that a man allows to stay.

"But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death." (James 1:14-15, KJV)

Drawn away. Enticed. Conceived. Brought forth. Finished. That is a process, and every step of it is a place where a man can stop and turn around. The earlier we stop it, the less it costs us.

Choosing the world makes us an enemy of God

James calls it spiritual adultery. God has called us to Himself, and when we give our hearts to the things of this world, we are being unfaithful to Him. John says the same thing, and he names exactly what the world is made of.

"Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever." (1 John 2:15-17, KJV)

The lust of the flesh. The lust of the eyes. The pride of life. That is the whole menu the world puts in front of us, and all of it is passing away. A man who builds his life on it is building on something that is already fading. A man who does the will of God abides for ever.

"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." (Romans 12:2, KJV)

Guard your eyes

For many men, the battle with lust is fought first through the eyes. Jesus made it plain that purity is not only about what we do. It is about what we allow ourselves to look at and dwell on.

"But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." (Matthew 5:28, KJV)

That raises the standard, but it also shows us where to fight. If the battle is in the heart and the eyes, then that is where we set our guard. Job understood this long ago. He did not wait until temptation was standing in front of him. He made a decision ahead of time.

"I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?" (Job 31:1, KJV)

A covenant with your eyes is a decision you make before the moment comes. It means settling in advance where you will not look, what you will not click, and what you will not let your mind replay. Every woman you see is someone's daughter, someone's sister, and a soul God loves. She is not an object for a man's imagination.

"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." (Proverbs 4:23, KJV)

Stop feeding what you are trying to starve

Here is an honest question. How many of us are praying for victory over lust while carrying a device in our pocket that feeds it all day long? Social media feeds are built to keep us looking. They learn what catches our eye and they serve us more of it. A man cannot keep feeding the very thing he is asking God to kill.

"I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me." (Psalm 101:3, KJV)

"Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way." (Psalm 119:37, KJV)

Paul tells us not to leave the door open for the flesh. Do not make room for it. Do not plan for it. Do not give it a place to land.

"But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof." (Romans 13:14, KJV)

That may mean deleting an app. It may mean unfollowing accounts, putting filters on your phone, or getting off social media altogether for a season. It may mean the phone does not come to bed with you. Whatever it costs, it costs less than what sin will take from you. Stop entertaining what God has told you to flee.

"And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them." (Ephesians 5:11, KJV)

Do not negotiate. Flee.

Some temptations are not meant to be debated. They are meant to be run from. Joseph did not stay in the room to argue with temptation. He left his garment behind and got out. Scripture gives us the same instruction.

"Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart." (2 Timothy 2:22, KJV)

Notice that Paul does not only say flee. He says follow, and he says do it with others who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. You do not win this alone. You need brothers who will pray with you, ask you the hard questions, and tell you the truth.

And know this: whatever you are facing, you are not the first man to face it, and God has not left you without a way out.

"There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." (1 Corinthians 10:13, KJV)

The way of escape is real. Sometimes it is a closed app. Sometimes it is a phone call to a brother. Sometimes it is simply standing up and walking out of the room. Take it.

Submit, resist, draw near

James does not leave us in conviction. He gives us the way back, and it is full of grace.

"But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded." (James 4:6-8, KJV)

Submit first. A man cannot resist the devil in his own strength. He resists from a position of surrender to God. Then resist. Say no, out loud if you have to, and mean it. And then draw near. The answer to lust is not only less of the world. It is more of God. Fill the time you used to spend scrolling with prayer and the Word.

"This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh." (Galatians 5:16, KJV)

"Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." (Psalm 119:11, KJV)

Knowing is not enough

James ends this chapter with a sentence that leaves no man any excuse.

"Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin." (James 4:17, KJV)

Most of us already know what needs to go. We know the app, the account, the habit, the late night routine. The issue is not knowledge. It is obedience. God is not asking us to understand more tonight. He is asking us to act on what we already know.

And when we humble ourselves and do it, He does not leave us on the ground.

"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up." (James 4:10, KJV)

What This Means

You cannot be a friend of the world and a friend of God at the same time. Lust starts as a desire, grows through what we allow, and ends in death if it is not stopped. So stop it early. Make a covenant with your eyes. Stop feeding your flesh through feeds and screens that keep putting sin in front of you, even if that means getting off social media. Make no provision for the flesh. When temptation comes, do not negotiate with it. Flee, and take the way of escape God provides. Walk with brothers who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. Submit to God, resist the devil, and draw near to the Lord. You already know what needs to change. Do it, and let God lift you up.

Think About This

  • Where in my life am I trying to be a friend of the world and a friend of God at the same time?
  • What am I allowing in front of my eyes that I would be ashamed for the Lord to see on my screen?
  • Have I made a covenant with my eyes, or am I just hoping I will be strong in the moment?
  • What app, account, or habit is feeding the very thing I keep asking God to take away?
  • What would it look like for me to make no provision for the flesh this week, starting tonight?
  • When temptation shows up, what is my way of escape, and who is the brother I will call?
  • What do I already know God wants me to do that I have not yet obeyed?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we come before You humbly and honestly. Search our hearts and show us anywhere we have made friends with the world and drifted from You. Forgive us for the times we entertained what You told us to flee, and for every look, every scroll, and every thought we allowed to stay when we should have turned away. We come by the blood of Jesus and ask You to cleanse our hands and purify our hearts. Lord, we submit ourselves to You right now. Give us strength to resist the devil, and let him flee from us. Help us make a covenant with our eyes and keep it. Give us the courage to cut off whatever feeds our flesh, whether it is an app, a feed, or a habit, and to make no provision for sin. When temptation comes, open our eyes to the way of escape and give us the will to take it. Fill the empty places in us with Your Spirit and Your Word. Surround us with brothers who call on You out of a pure heart. Teach us to honor every woman as a daughter of God. Draw near to us as we draw near to You, and lift us up as we humble ourselves before You. In Jesus' name, amen.

Closing Verse
