Don’t Just Hear It, Live It

We can sit in church.

We can have deep conversations about God.
We can even know Scripture very well.
But the question is, What are we doing with what we have heard?
James gives us a warning that we cannot afford to ignore:

The Word is not given to us simply to make us knowledgeable. It is given to transform how we live.
The Word Should Show You Yourself
James compares the Word of God to a mirror.

A mirror shows you what you actually look like.
It does not show you what you wish you looked like.
In the same way, God’s Word shows us who we really are.

Notice the word “continues.”
That word matters.
We don’t simply look into God’s Word once.
We continue in it.
We don’t obey God only when we feel inspired.
We continue.
We don’t remain disciplined only when life is easy.
We continue.
We don’t stop pursuing God because we believe we have learned enough.
We continue.
The Christian life is not about having one great spiritual experience. It is about allowing God to build something in us over time.
Don’t Deceive Yourself
The Bible says we can deceive ourselves.
That should get our attention.
Self deception happens when we convince ourselves that everything is fine when God is showing us that something needs to change.
We can say we love God while refusing to obey Him.
We can hear truth while continuing to live against it.
We can know what Scripture says while making excuses for why we don’t have to apply it.
We can even promise God that we are going to change, then never change.
The mirror exposes the problem.
But the mirror cannot make the change for us.
We have to respond.
When God shows you something, don’t just acknowledge it.
Do something about it.
Remember Who You Represent

Their testimonies can strengthen you.

Their correction can protect you.

Lead by Serving Others
One testimony centered around receiving a promotion to train others.
That testimony carries a spiritual lesson beyond the workplace.
When God gives you influence, don’t make it all about yourself.
Pour into somebody else.
Teach somebody.
Train somebody.
Prepare somebody.
Help somebody become better than you.
True leadership is not simply getting a higher position. It is using your position to help other people grow.
The same principle applies spiritually.
If God has taught you something, don’t hoard it.
Share it.
If God has brought you through something, encourage someone else.
If God has given you wisdom, use it to help someone avoid unnecessary pain.
Your experience may become somebody else’s instruction.
Your testimony may become somebody else’s encouragement.
Your obedience may become somebody else’s example.
Parenting Requires Wisdom and Patience
The discussion also touched on the difficulty of raising children, especially during rebellious seasons.
Parenting requires both love and correction.
A parent cannot simply protect a child from every uncomfortable situation forever.
Sometimes growth requires challenge.

Ask:
“What am I going to do with this Word?”
Because the blessing is not simply in hearing.
The blessing is in continuing.
The blessing is in obeying.
The blessing is in becoming a doer.

Before you move on with your day, stop and look into the mirror of God’s Word.
Ask yourself:
What has God been showing me that I keep forgetting?
Don’t run from the answer.
Don’t explain it away.
Don’t blame somebody else.
Don’t wait for another sermon.
Don’t wait for another Bible study.
Respond now.
The Word has been given.
The mirror is in front of you.
The Holy Spirit is teaching.
The question is no longer whether you heard it.
The question is whether you will do it.
