Opening Verse
"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14, KJV)
The Message
Look around and it is easy to feel that the land is sick. Division, violence, and corruption fill the news. Our streets, our schools, our homes, and our marriages are all under pressure. Many people are waiting for someone in charge to fix it. But God put the healing of the land in the hands of His own people. Not the loudest people. Not the most powerful people. His people, the ones called by His name.
And He told us exactly what to do. Humble ourselves. Pray. Seek His face. Turn from our wicked ways. Then He will hear, He will forgive, and He will heal. Whether you read it in the King James or in a modern translation, the promise says the same thing. The healing of the land starts on our knees.
Turning is the key
None of us is at our best every day. We are all going to have weak moments. The promise is not for people who never stumble. It is for people who keep turning. As long as we keep turning from what is wrong and back toward Him, He will hear from heaven.
That means we come honestly. We confess the sins we know about, and we ask Him to cleanse us from the ones we committed without even realizing it.
"Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults." (Psalm 19:12, KJV)
Humility is where it begins. A proud heart cannot pray for a land, because it is too busy defending itself.
"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up." (James 4:10, KJV)
We are called to be watchmen
A watchman stands on the wall while the city sleeps. He sees what is coming and he does not stay quiet about it. That is our calling. Every man who knows the Lord has been placed on the wall to pray for his family, his city, and his nation.
"I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the LORD, keep not silence," (Isaiah 62:6, KJV)
Many hear that call. Fewer stay consistent with it. The enemy works hard to fill our days with distractions, things designed to separate us and divide us so that we are easier to conquer. A watchman cannot afford to be distracted. And when the watching and the pouring out leave us empty, we can come back to Him and be refilled.
"For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul." (Jeremiah 31:25, KJV)
Pray for everything
The beauty of this kind of prayer is that it leaves nothing out. When we humble ourselves to pray for the land, we start lifting up every part of it. Scripture tells us to pray this way.
"Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;" (Ephesians 6:18, KJV)
Pray for those in authority
We pray for our president, our governors, our mayors, and every leader. We ask God to give them wisdom and a heart of justice. We pray for peace and for an end to division, violence, and corruption. We pray that every leader would understand that they will be held accountable for what God placed them there to do. Some may think they control the system. But true authority belongs to God, and He is always in control.
"I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty." (1 Timothy 2:1-2, KJV)
"And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:" (Daniel 2:21, KJV)
There are many things happening in the world right now that are signs God is speaking. Pray that those who do not know Him would become curious enough to ask why, and that when they go looking for answers, they would be led to Him.
Pray for our streets and our schools
We pray for protection on our streets. We even pray for the person who waits until others are asleep to take what does not belong to him. We ask God to reach his heart, to give him a wake up moment, so that he finds another way and finds the Lord.
"Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth." (Ephesians 4:28, KJV)
We pray for our schools and for the school systems themselves. Much of what looks political is really spiritual.
"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." (Ephesians 6:12, KJV)
We ask God to station His angels in our schools, to protect them from threats and violence, and to use those schools to expose children to Him, especially children from homes that do not know Him. We pray for more godly men in those buildings, and for renewed strength for the ones already there.
So many young people simply want to be heard, and they are not being heard at home. They need men who will slow down and listen. When we are in those roles, we must not be quick to judge. We must be quick to hear the cry of their souls, even when it is personal, even when it is our own child. The enemy will use our emotions to distract us from what God is doing in that moment.
"Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God." (James 1:19-20, KJV)
Pray for our neighbors
We pray for our neighbors, especially those who are struggling, homeless, or alone. We pray for unity and love to grow in our communities. When we reach out to them, it is important that they see God and not just us. Many young people are closer to Him than they realize. When they open the door, we want to be vessels He can speak through, so that whatever thorn or pain they carry can be removed and they can hear His call.
"But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us." (2 Corinthians 4:7, KJV)
"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." (Matthew 5:16, KJV)
Pray for the church
We pray for our pastors, for church members, and for missionaries around the world. We pray they would have boldness to share the truth and to share it in love, no matter who is listening. Some topics get avoided because they are uncomfortable. But we live in a time when we do not know when the Lord is coming back. People need the whole truth.
"And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word," (Acts 4:29, KJV)
"But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:" (Ephesians 4:15, KJV)
We pray that the gospel reaches those who have never heard it and that their hearts would be open. And we ask for revival and for discernment.
"Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?" (Psalm 85:6, KJV)
Pray over your house
The healing of the land also starts at our own front door. We pray for peace in our homes and for the presence of God to fill them, so that everyone who walks in can feel it. Through Christ we carry real authority over the enemy in our households.
"Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you." (Luke 10:19, KJV)
We pray over our children, that they would be protected, guided, and grow into who God created them to be. As parents, we have to be careful not to press our own judgments, struggles, and upbringings onto a gift that belongs to Him. We pray against confusion and arguments. We pray that our homes would be full of love and become houses of prayer.
"…for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people." (Isaiah 56:7, KJV)
Even a thief knows a soft target is easier than a hard one. A praying home is a hard target. Leave the enemy no opening and no crack.
"Neither give place to the devil." (Ephesians 4:27, KJV)
Pray for marriages
We pray for husbands and wives to have patience, forgiveness, and the deep love Scripture describes. Marriage came from God, and only through Him will it truly work. Some people think their relationship is over. But if they will seek Him, it can be a new beginning, because He created both the beginning and the end. And we pray for young couples to build on God with wisdom, remembering that this is their own first time, not their parents' or their mentors'.
"Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain." (Psalm 127:1, KJV)
"And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken." (Ecclesiastes 4:12, KJV)
Pray for provision, healing, and covering
We pray for those without work, those in debt, and those trying to build or run a business. We ask God not only to open doors, but to take the door off the hinges so nothing can shut it.
"I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name." (Revelation 3:8, KJV)
We pray for healing for those who are sick in body, stressed in mind, and tired in spirit. We pray for doctors to have wisdom and to treat their work as a duty to serve, not a scheme for money. And we ask God for covering from dangers we cannot see: spiritual attacks, jealousy, and hidden traps. We pray His angels surround our families, our homes, and our children, when we sleep and when we travel.
"The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them." (Psalm 34:7, KJV)
"I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety." (Psalm 4:8, KJV)
Pray for the forgotten
Finally, we pray for the ones who are often forgotten: the lonely, the prisoner, single mothers and single fathers, orphans, widows, the elderly, and the youth who feel lost. They have a purpose. They are not lost if they are ready to be guided, and they need brothers who will help them on their way. We pray for those battling addiction and anxiety in secret.
"A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation. God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land." (Psalm 68:5-6, KJV)
"Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7, KJV)
Prayer takes you outside yourself
Something happens in a man when he prays this way. Carrying our hearts to all these different places unlocks a different part of our souls and our humanity. It moves us outside the norm and outside of ourselves. We stop being consumed by our own small world and start carrying the burdens of others. And through it all, we pray for ourselves too, that we would stay humble and close to God.
"Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." (James 5:16, KJV)
What This Means
God has not left the healing of the land up to chance or up to politicians. He has given the assignment to His people. Humble yourself. Pray. Seek His face. Keep turning from what is wrong. Take your place on the wall as a watchman, and do not let distraction pull you off of it. Then pray for everything: leaders, streets, schools, neighbors, the church, your home, your marriage, your work, your health, and the people everyone else forgets. When God's people pray like that, He has promised to hear, to forgive, and to heal.
Think About This
- When was the last time I prayed for my city, my nation, or its leaders, and not just for my own needs?
- Is there a weak area in my life I need to keep turning from so my prayers are not hindered?
- Where am I allowing distractions to pull me off the wall as a watchman?
- Is there a young person in my life who needs me to be quick to listen and slow to judge?
- Is my home a hard target or a soft target? What would make it a house of prayer?
- Am I pressing my own struggles or upbringing onto my children instead of helping them become who God created them to be?
- Who are the forgotten people around me that I can lift up in prayer this week, and maybe reach out to?
Prayer
Father, we humble ourselves before You this morning. We seek Your face, and we turn from our wicked ways. Forgive us for the sins we know about and the ones we committed without knowing. Make us faithful watchmen who do not hold our peace, and replenish us where we have poured out. We lift up our president, our governors, our mayors, and all in authority. Give them wisdom and a heart of justice, and bring an end to division, violence, and corruption. Protect our streets and our schools. Reach the hearts of those who would do harm and turn them toward You. Raise up godly men who will listen to our youth and speak life to them. Give our pastors and missionaries boldness to speak Your truth in love, and send revival to our land. Fill our homes with Your presence, love, and peace, and make them houses of prayer where the enemy has no place. Restore hurting marriages and give young couples wisdom to build on You. Provide for those without work or in debt, open doors no man can shut, and heal those who are sick in body, stressed in mind, and tired in spirit. Cover our families with Your angels when we sleep and when we travel. Be near to the lonely, the prisoner, the widow, the orphan, the single parent, the elderly, and every young person who feels lost. Keep us humble and close to You. Thank You for hearing us, for Your mercy, and for Your peace. Hear from heaven, forgive our sin, and heal our land. In Jesus' name, amen.
Closing Verse
"Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not." (Jeremiah 33:3, KJV)
